When my word for 2018 came in early, I was afraid to acknowlege it. Having a seemingly easy word the previous year traumatized me in using another big word for the following year because most easy words are actually difficult to maintain and achieve. I was even set to just forget one word until I read about Jared Latigo’s post on why courage requires fear.
Courage is not the absence of fear but rather requires fear. There is no need to be courageous if you aren’t afraid of something. We’re afraid of plenty of things throughout the course of our day and lives. We wouldn’t be human if we weren’t.
Yes, I am afraid of what this word will bring me. I am afraid of what will come the next year when the previous one tested me in ways I never thought it would but I won’t let my fear win. I’ll be courageous and face each day with a brave heart. As Michael Hyatt said, “Courage is the willingness to act in spite of your fear.” Here I am facing the first challenge of my word, overcoming my fear of big words.
